Athens County Copwatch

Policing the police using research, facts, and first-hand accounts.

We are a tight-knit group of community members and activists taking a closer look at the police presence in our community. Our focus is on the data which highlights the violence, excessive spending, and systematic racism perpetuated by local police departments. Our mission is to end the violent institution of policing, which systemically targets Black and other oppressed peoples while depleting precious public resources.

We collect data using Freedom of Information Act requests, local newspaper archives, and publicly shared information.

We analyze the data with attention to racial disparities, city priorities, police misconduct, and comparison to other cities.

We share our knowledge with our community in order to encourage change and advocate for reform at local, state, and national levels.
